Ingredients
  

For the Patty Melts:

  • ½ lb ground beef 80/20
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 slices American cheese

For the Onions:

  • 1 large yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions
 

Caramelize the Onions:

  • Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
  • Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
  • Stir occasionally for 15–20 minutes until golden and soft. Set aside.

Cook the Beef Patties:

  • Season ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Shape into two wide, thin patties slightly larger than your bread slices.
  • In the same skillet over medium-high heat, sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through.
  • Remove and set aside.

Build the Patty Melts:

  • Butter one side of each bread slice.
  • Heat skillet over medium heat.
  • Place 2 bread slices butter-side down in skillet.
  • Layer each with Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, American cheese, and a top slice of bread (butter-side up).

Toast and Melt:

  • Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing slightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden and cheese is melted.

Serve:

  • Slice each patty melt diagonally and serve immediately.
