Caramelize the Onions:
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
- Stir occasionally for 15–20 minutes until golden and soft. Set aside.
Cook the Beef Patties:
- Season ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Shape into two wide, thin patties slightly larger than your bread slices.
- In the same skillet over medium-high heat, sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through.
- Remove and set aside.
Build the Patty Melts:
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- Heat skillet over medium heat.
- Place 2 bread slices butter-side down in skillet.
- Layer each with Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, American cheese, and a top slice of bread (butter-side up).
Toast and Melt:
- Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, pressing slightly with a spatula, until the bread is golden and cheese is melted.
Serve:
- Slice each patty melt diagonally and serve immediately.
